Burn Notice is a stylish spy comedy/drama that I watched for the first time tonight. It is a USA show created by Matt Nix and starring Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Bruce Campbell, and Sharon Gless.
I thought it was really funny and clever. The main character is an ex-spy who was burned by the agency he once worked for and now "freelances" on jobs for whoever needs his services at the time.
One of the coolest parts of Burn Notice are the voice overs where the main guy explains whatever device he is building or how he is going to ensnare his newest victim into whatever given trap he is going to make.

Somehow FX has become one of the most daring cable channels out there, with fare like Nip/Tuck and now Damages. The cast is rounded out by Ted Danson, Tate Donovan, and Rose Byrne as the young, sexy ingenue.

Academy Awards 2009 Nominations - Who's Getting the Oscar
Academy Awards are Coming Up.
Who will win the Academy Award this year? Which movie will sweep? Will it be Slumdog Millionaire? Probably--that movie is amazing. If you haven't seen it yet, you should.
Awards shows have recently been pretty darn boring and sort of inconsequential, but we will see what they do with this year's Academy Awards. Here is a list of the Academy Awards Nominees.
Best Actor:
Mickey Rourke for the Wrestler (great movie--definitely see it)
Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks great. If you like political-themed movies, this is right up your alley. And it's directed by Ron Howard, so it should please a good amount of the population.
Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button. Hmmmm? Probably not going to win.
Sean Penn for Milk. Penn is always a contender and can never be ruled out.
Richard Jenkins for The Visitor. I have no idea what this movie is, and even though this guy is a good actor, he probably doesn't stand a chance unless the Academy feels like making a self-righteous statement that they don't care about relative fame. Also hurting his chances is the fact that he was in Step Brothers last year.

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has recently inked a deal with William Morris to be represented by the Los Angeles talent agency.
This just sounds funny to me. Usually, you expect to hear about a show business personality signing with a new agent. But in this case, it's a disgraced former public official. You can expect to see a book or two come out very shortly. I bet you can't wait to get your hands on one of these weighty tomes.

Burn Notice is one of USA network's most popular shows. It is a spy comedy that takes place in the very interesting and colorful Miami Beach, Florida. The show is part of the "Characters Welcome" banner that USA brandishes proudly, and fits in well with shows like Monk and Psych, which prominently feature the personalities of the characters in the show.
This is at once a good way to get viewers interested in a show (because everyone likes off-the-wall, colorful characters) and to save money on production costs (the actors do the heavy lifting). The one problem I have with Monk is that all the sets look like cardboard or like the scenes were filmed at a friend's house and the acting really isn't that good.

This show is a take on the Indiana Jones movies (did you see the most recent Indie? It was terrible), the Da Vinci Code, and even other recent shows like the made-for-tv movie The Librarian. The show delves into some interesting historical stuff, but I wonder if it carries its weight.

This episode of season 5 is called Prince Family Paper. If course, it's hilarious. So far this season, we've seen some serious ups and downs for this cast of characters.
There have been a few engagements, there has been cheating, and of course, Ryan returned once again as a temp (after a short stint in prison). The Office Season 5 is still going strong and shows no signs of letting loose on the throttle. It is seriously hilarious.

Watch Series Premiere of Lie to Me starring Tim Roth
Watch Lie to Me the series premiere of the Fox tv show online.
Lie to Me stars Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, among many other roles) as Cal Lightman, a behavioral expert who uses his ability to assess human body language and "universal expressions" to solve or prevent crimes. If you are a fan of police procedural shows like The Closer and CSI, then you'll probably dig this show.
This hour long show looks pretty good from the parts that I watched. Tim Roth is a good actor and fun to watch. Check out the first episode of Lie to Me right here courtesy of Hulu and Fox. You might get sucked into the show in the first minute when Roth's character analyzed the body language of a prisoner and gets the details on an impending crime just in time to stop it.
The tagline to the series is "The average person lies 3 times in a ten minute conversation." Another line that summarizes the theme of Lie to Me is one he utters in the first scene of the show. He says something to the effect of: "I don't trust talking."

Watch The Office Episode - The Duel
The Office is an amazing show. I don't know how they do it, but with each and every episode (except for a few) the show just seems to get better and better.
One of the reasons The Office might be so good is that the cast is nothing short of epic. Sure, you may say that the people who play Oscar and Kevin don't do much, but you would be wrong. They do a lot very subtly. Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski are awesome as Jim and Pam (newly engaged) and Rainn Wilson is amazing as Dwight Schrute, office tool.
I also have to mention Steve Carrel, who is probably the most talented actor in Hollywood. He can do so much with a deadpan look into the camera and his comedy is pretty advanced. The guy knows what he's doing.
Season 5 of the Office has had a pretty good run. We've watched as Andy has courted Andy and we've seen Jim ask Pam to marry him. In this episode, The Duel, Andy discovers that Angela is still seeing her ex, Dwight. This upsets him as he's been planning what would probably be the most elaborate beat farm wedding of all time, so he challenges Dwight to a duel in the parking lot at four o'clock. I could go on and tell you what else happens in this episode of my favorite show, but I'll just stop writing and let you watch it for yourself.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop - I Don't Know about You, But I'm Seeing It
This movie looks hilarious. Paul Blart: Mall Cop, (which is in theaters now) stars Kevin James (from King of Queens and Hitch) and looks really funny.
The whole movie (at least judging from the preview, which you can watch below, and surprisingly isn't in parenthesis like everything else in this post) seems to rely on Kevin James' comic ability and his surprisingly deft physical comedy.
One of the things James' has going for him is he a very likable guy--not to mention one of the funniest actors out there. Paul Blart looks very funny. I may not get out to see it in theaters (what with the current economic crisis forcing me to do my laundry in the L.A. river), but it's a definite first week rental.

Will Smith in Barack Obama Film?
There were recent rumors that Will Smith wanted to play Barack Obama in a Spike Lee film.
Well, according to Spike Lee, he has no plans to make an Obama film. Not even with Will Smith.
If an Obama movie gets made, you know Smith will have first crack at the role (I mean he has to right?), but does Spike want to be on the sidelines for that? Interesting. We'll have to see what happens.

Slumdog Millionaire is Amazing - Go See It
If TV on the Web was going to choose a movie of the year, then Slumdog Millionaire would be it. I saw it last night and it was nothing short of amazing. (There may be spoilers if you read on from here!!)
Slumdog is a beautiful story told beautifully. It was enjoyable, entertaining, and uplifting. It's the story of a young, extremely poor Indian man from Mumbai who ends up as a contestant on India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
He and brothers' lives take very different turns as he vies to find again the woman he loves and take her away from the life she has with the gangster who has her held captive.
I highly recommend Slumdog Millionaire and I hope it wins the Oscar for best picture (and many more besides) because then even more people will go see it.

Everwood is a show starring Treat Williams who, "After the death of his wife,seeks a fresh start by moving his children from New York City to Everwood, Colorado. Williams plays an ambitious and brilliant neurosurgeon."

You know the type of show where a big city hotshot goes to a small town and gets acquainted with the colorful locals and realizes that this is where real life happens. Everyone learns something, and it's all good. It's has the vibe of a show like October Road or that other show that stars Chad Michael Murray where the basketball team is the focal point of the show.
Come to think of it there are quite a few of these kinds of shows out there. But it seems like they're all getting canceled. One of the beautiful things (or downsides) of the internet is that it can give semi-popular shows a second run.

Celebrities are always being spotted in their latest, cleanest, meanest cars. In this case, BJ Novak of The Office went with a more modest choice by celebrity standards (and you may not know exactly who he is but he's hilarious).

Owen Wilson Saved by Rolex?
In one of the stranger and most ridiculous press releases ever released, a Los Angeles jeweler wrote that Owen Wilson's submariner Rolex watch and his attendance at Rolex-sponsored events helped bring him back from his recent dark times.
They actually wrote this on their website. I've never heard of anything more ridiculous. Shortly after Wilson ran into personal trouble, he was seen in pictures wearing the Submariner Rolex and evidently this company wanted to go down as sleaziest sales people of the year.
The company has no involvement with Wilson. This is very strange. No one's arguing that Rolex's are very nice watches and probably make you feel very good while wearing one, but come on.

Watch United States of Tara First Episode Online
United States of Tara is Showtime's latest foray into dark comedy.
Boasting Steven Spielberg as a producer, Diablo Cody as a creator, and Toni Collette and Josh Corbett in starring roles, United States looks like it could be a pretty name-brand romp through personality disease. Didn't get that last part?
Collette's character is a schizophrenic and the show's premise comes from the idea that she assumes a different personality on any given day and her family never knows what they're going to get. Showtime has been on a pretty good run in recent times with hit shows like Californication, The Tudors, and Dexter. They're really jumping into the darker themes and having a good time doing it. I have to say I have been enjoying this upstart network's upwardly mobile downward spiral into the depths of human nature.
Having said all this, you don't even need to subscribe to the pay channel in order to watch the show. You can now watch it free online right here in this post (thanks to our collective friends at Fancast). Watch United States of Tara premiere episode online. Verizon and Alltel Wireless to Merge
Verizon Wireless and Alltel will soon become one company and will become the largest wireless provider in the country, edging out AT&T by 3 million subscribers.
Verizon will amass considerable debt in the process of this deal, but will have a total of 78 million subscribers to their cell phone networks at the end of it. Verizon prepaid cell phones also are gaining in popularity.
We will see how this affects Alltel users. (Engadget)

Watch American Dad Episode: Iced, Iced Baby
In case you don't know or haven't seen it yet, American Dad is an offshoot of the creator of Family Guy.
It is in most cases even more bizarre, crazy, and if you can believe it, more cynical than Fox's Family Guy. It's a very strange and entertaining, and of course hilariously weird show. If you like the off the wall humor of Seth MacFarlane (series creator), than you will get a kick out of this primetime cartoon.
Think Family Guy, but replace the talking dog with a talking alien. Watch the American Dad episode, Iced, Iced Baby below in full length video. In this episode: "Steve's new relationship with his girlfriend gives Francine empty nest syndrome; Roger tries to enroll in college with Hayley."
