NCIS is a show that's been growing on me for a while.

At first I thought it was just a CSI hack/wannabe, but now I realize it's a better show. It has a good "personality"--the group of characters, who are all part of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, is what makes the show.

NCIS is pretty funny and the odd mix of dedicated agents, including the wacky forensics experts, all led by Mark Harmon's Jethro Gibbs, make the show pretty entertaining.

Firefly is a show, created by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, that was pulled off the air before a full first season on tv.

But the show had a second life in DVD and with a sizable and vocal cult following. As a result of the ensuing popularity that came after only 11 of the original 14 episodes were shown, the movie Serenity was made. Featuring much of the same cast, this movie was a hit with fans of the original show.

Firefly takes place in the year 2517 in a world where the United States and China rule the world as The Alliance. The defining aspect of Firefly is that it is a science fiction show with a "Western" bent. The language, some of the music, and many of the story lines can be considered "western movie" themed. It actually is a seamless hybrid of the two genres of movies as they share the same themes of new frontiers and outlaw rebellion.



Firefly is also a comedy, so it's lighthearted and entertaining.

Watch TV Shows Online at Sling

Sling.com is the newest kid on the internet tv block. It's in beta, but it still is hard to call it a kid because it seems pretty darn developed already.

It faces stiff competition from Fancast and Hulu, and actually looks similar to the latter at least when you access a video player. You can watch a lot of tv shows online at Sling as well as full length movies.

Like the other two online tv show and movie websites I mentioned, your program will be broken up by a few commercials.

5 Great TV Shows You May Not Have Seen Yet but Should

Breaking Bad. AMC.

Breaking Bad is a show that stars Bryan Cranston (the dad from Malcolm in the Middle) as a down on his luck loser who ekes out a living as a chemistry teacher at the local New Mexico high school. But he loves his family unconditionally. On top of everything else, he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and needs to decide whether or not to undergo chemotherapy.

But what makes the show so great is how he overcomes his adversity and takes his life into his own hands. He is a very smart guy with a chemistry background and he lives in New Mexico. So how would he go about making money? If you answered, "cooking meth," then kudos to you. He begins to cook meth and sell it. This is where things get crazy. He gets wrapped up in the seedy drug underworld of New Mexico in order to take care of his family. Did I mention that his brother in law is a cop hell-bent on weeding out drug dealers and addicts from society? This just adds to the conflict Cranston's character faces. I like this show because it is exhilirating watching the problems this guy gets into and how he gets out of them.

You never know what's going to happen next in Breaking Bad. But most of all, the show has heart, a lot of which comes from Cranston's heartfelt portrayal of a loving father and husband who is a genuinely good person. At the end of the day, he's just trying to provide for his family. And if he has to become a gun-wielding meth dealer by night, that's what he's going to do. Breaking Bad may sound sort of heavy, but it's actually light hearted and very funny, which is pretty amazing if you look at the subject matter of the show. Breaking Bad was one of the best shows of 2008. The second season starts soon on AMC.

Mad Men. AMC.

If you think it's odd that AMC had such a stellar year in terms of shows, then you are not alone. In it's first two trips to the plate, the American Movie Channel hit two out of the park with Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Since it premiered, Mad Men has been a critical darling if not a ratings juggernaut. The show has gotten so much praise for the interesting stories it contains, the writing, the acting, and the clothes and set design. In other words, it's been praised for everything, and won several Emmy awards. Mad Men is a stylish show about a New York advertising agency in the 1960's. The main character is Don Draper (John Hamm), and we follow his exploits in the boardroom and the bedroom and get glimpses into his mysterious past.

Each episode of Mad Men weaves in a historical American event and deals with it in an interesting way. The characters seem to talk like people from the 60's and there are all kinds of factual details that pull you into the fictional world of the show. Mad Men will be back for a third season on AMC in 2009.

Californication. Showtime.

I had to add this show because I really enjoy watching it when it comes on every week and I store it on my DVR for months after it airs so I can watch an episode whenever I feel like it. Californication is about a writer named Hank Moody (played by David Duchovny) who basically ambles around Los Angeles, often drunk or otherwise intoxicated, looking for inspiration and vying for the affections of his ex-girlfriend and his teenage daughter.



Californication is an adult show that deals with adult situations (however unreal or fantastic they may be). Hank parties, picks up women, and sometimes squeezes in a little writing. David Duchovny is great in the role, possibly because it's not that much of a stretch from his reality. Evan Handler is great as his agent/best friend. This is an entertaining show and is somewhat similar to Entourage in that it is an insidery Hollywood show.

If you don't have Showtime, you might want to see if you can get a trial period for free. It worked for me--I got six months free. All you gotta do is ask and if you get the right representative, you may get what you want.

Season 2 is coming to an end, but hopefully it will be back for a third next year.

The Tudors. Showtime.

If you followed my advice and got Showtime for free, then you will also be able to watch another Showtime original series, The Tudors. Starring Johnathon Rhys Myers, the main character is Henry VIII. This is a good show for pretty much anyone. If you like action, history, or drama and intrigue, then this could be a show for you. Season 3 starts soon on Showtime. You can also watch episodes from the first and second seasons on CBS soon.

Henry VIII has absolute power and he uses it in ways you might imagine. He weds, beds, and beheads without conscience and even goes so far as to start a new church in England. Sure, there are times when you have to suspend your disbelief especially if you know your history, but it's all in good fun. It's entertainment after all.

Flight of the Conchords. HBO.

Out of all the shows I listed here, Flight might be my favorite because there is nothing else like it. It really is a show that sprang out of the minds of the two stars of the show Jermaine and Bret, who are in a two-person New Zealand folk rock band trying to make it in the Big Apple.

The humor and situations in Flight of the Conchords are really out there and always clever and cool. They break into funny songs in every episode that help to carry the story. If you like weird comedy, definitely watch Flight when it starts next month.

Probably the best thing about CSI Miami is the opening scene where Horatio Cane (David Caruso) first visits the crime scene. In every single episode, right before the opening credits and song start, he quickly delivers a clever line just to get things going.

30 Rock Season 3 Episode: Reunion

I've been on a week-long 30 Rock kick. I can't believe I haven't paid attention to this show for almost three years.

How did it slip under my radar? I do remember watching the series premiere and not being blown away. But man what a funny show.

30 Rock is filled with quirky, cutting, and topical SNL-style humor, all held together by clever story lines. Great show. Tina Fey is hilarious and has great chemistry with co-star Alec Baldwin. Tracy Jordan straight up brings the weird.

5 Reason Why You Should Watch 30 Rock Season 3.

It's funny. This is a given, and it should be because 30 Rock is a comedy. It is really funny.

It's weird. 30 Rock has a quirky, very clever sense of humor to it. It's reminiscent of the humor of Saturday Night Live and particularly the dry, sort of sad-sack humor of Tina Fey's weekend update. This comes as no surprise because Tina Fey created the show and Lorne Michaels produces it.

Epic cast. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin just work together. Not to mention Tracy Jordan, one of the funniest guys on the planet.

Great guest stars. This season already has featured Steve Martin and Jennifer Aniston in very funny episodes.

The last reason you should watch 30 Rock is because the actress who plays Cerie, the receptionist, is hot. Really hot. See below.

Jennifer Aniston Should be Left Alone

I don't usually get too personal here, but enough is enough. I've seen Jennifer Aniston serve as tabloid sad-sack punching bag for too long. I know that adding insult to injury is the fact that Aniston's "one that got away" happens to be Brad Pitt and she's getting older (although not that old at a rip 39).

She still looks amazing and has a huge draw to her movies.

South Park Class offered at College

It finally happened. A class all about the Comedy Central tv show South Park will be offered at Brooklyn college.

The guy teaching the class claims that there are "important messages" on "very relevant topics" scattered throughout episodes of the irreverent and politically incorrect animated comedy.

If you are a boxing fan or just a sports fan in general and you get HBO, then you definitely will enjoy HBO's 24/7.

24/7 is a super-produced, entertaining show about upcoming boxing matches on the pay channel. The next fight is the one pitting Manny Pacquiao against Oscar De La Hoya.

24/7 is pretty much a multi-episode commercial for HBO fights, but that doesn't mean it's a bad show. In fact, it's one of the best sports shows on tv and has an Emmy to prove it. You get a good behind the scenes view of the fighters training for the big night as well as learning a little about their family lives and history. You get some insight into the athletes and what makes them tic as their date with destiny approaches.

This show was entertaining, but if you saw the fight, then you know that De La Hoya's career is over because he got owned by Pacquiao. De La Hoya still made tons of cash--even though he threw in the towel. I'll never pay for another De La Hoya fight.

Michael Cera Gets Fired from Knocked Up Video

Granted I'm posting this pretty late in the game, since Knocked Up has been out on DVD for over a year now, but I still thought I'd drop this video for those of you who haven't yet seen it.

It's a video of Michael Cera getting into it with Judd Apatow (director of the movie) on the set of Knocked Up. It's obviously a viral video to promote the movie and possibly a mockumentary on the dvd. It's really funny. You gotta love Michael Cera--that guy is hilarious.

He gets all flustered and throws a hissy fit when Apatow asks him to do take after take on set. Really funny stuff right here. Enjoy.
