Eureka Episode Review: Phoenix Rising

Eureka: Phoenix Rising

Following a time travel story arc, Sheriff Jack Carter and normally-friendly mechanic Henry Deacon struggle to reconcile their memories of a four year history that never happened.

Meanwhile, something is spontaneously combusting co-workers at Global Dynamic.

The main mystery of the combusting co-workers is the central plot point of the episode, and the resolution may seem a little ho-hum.

Of course, in the tradition of good science fiction series, this episode plays significant nods to what’s gone before, rewarding long-time viewers with some strong chemistry between the male lead and female love interest, and even stronger chemistry between the male lead and his male peers.

Indeed, the most interesting dynamic in this series is probably that of Jack and Dr. Nathan Stark, the head of Global Dynamic.

Yet in this episode, it’s the current between Jack and Henry that plays in the forefront-- the anger and suspicious driving a wedge between two friends who have shared a great deal, and now would do best to let it all go.

That pain and angst give the episode a bite that would otherwise be hard to capture in contrast to the slick futuristic sets and scenes.

Overall, the show is like a cross between The Andy Griffith Show and Real Genius. The premise is that the eerily happy-go-happy community of Eureka is populated almost entirely with super-geniuses, many of whom work at the research company Global Dynamic.

Sheriff Jack Carter and his daughter Zoe take up unexpected residence in the town, and
their attempts to fit in are “interesting” to say the least.

The character Jack Carter is certainly the focus of the show, to the point of making the show so character-centric, it almost feels like it could appear on USA, not the Sci-Fi network.

While the decision to cast Colin Ferguson as Jack was doubtless a good one, it’s certainly no coincidence that he has the “Mike Rowe” everyman quality to him,
to make this show appeal to both geeks and ordinary citizens alike.

Eureka Season 3 premiered Tuesday, July 29th, and can already be viewed online at SciFi.com.

Watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Online

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along blog is Joss Whedon's first (and probably nowhere near last) foray into made-for-online content. It's a really good first effort that pretty much blows most other online content out of the water.

The first thing you realize is that good actors make a difference, knowing how to create professional content makes a difference, having something written (and in this case written well) makes a difference.

Dr. Horrible starts off with the classic "podcast format" of a guy talking into a camera ironically and trying to be funny.

Neil Patrick Harris takes this to the next level because he really is funny in this show. Then there's the singing element to the show, which is a nice touch and the actors pull it off, the heavy lifting done by Doogie (I mean Harris) and Nathan Fillian (Firefly).

Harris plays the character of Dr. Horrible, who keeps a blog, and responds to his readers' questions on camera. Dr. Horrible wants to be a part of the Evil League of Evil Villains, but his plans to be a part of the nefarious group are consistently foiled by his nemesis, Captain Hammer.

Dr. Horrible is not your run of the mill aspiring super-villain either, he has relationship problems, just like you would expect out of any Whedon-esque (anti) hero. Landing the girl of his evil dreams is not going as smoothly as he would like.

Overall this show is really good, really funny, and shows what professional talent can bring to the smaller screen. If Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along blog is a precursor of what is to come in the online entertainment environment, then that's a good thing.

Beverly Hills 90210 Season 5 Available on DVD

Now you can get Beverly Hills 90210 Season 5 on DVD. The new incarnation of 90210 is coming this fall on the CW.

Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty, and Joe E. Tata (Nat, the guy who runs the Peach Pit) will all be on the show.

Buy season 5 of the original 90210 at Amazon. This was right when the show hit its sweet spot. They weren't in college yet (or were they).

Mad Men Doubles Audience With Season Premiere

Mad Men season two premiered this past Sunday to two million viewers, which is double the average the show attained each episode in its first season.

AMC spent $25 million in a marketing push to gain new viewers, which, in concert with the 16 Emmy nominations it garnered last month, raised the profile of Mad Men considerably.

The marketing push seems to have worked, but will Mad Men hold the newly exposed audience? We will see.

Mad Men is probably the best show on tv right now, and it's interesting especially when you realize that it is AMC's first foray into dramatic scripted content. AMC's dark comedy, Breaking Bad, is another surprise hit for the network.

AMC is now in a position of having two of the best shows on tv in its first two tries.

Online TV Viewing Habits Increasing

This may come as no surprise to most people out there, but more and more people are getting their tv shows online.

There is a clear shift occurring, and one that will continue to occur as more and more people flip open their laptops to watch their favorite shows.

With tv networks adapting to the changes by showing their shows on the internet, the online entertainment environment will shape up even more over the next few years.

Comcast and News Corp are on the ball with their popular online tv sites and it is as yet unclear who will step up and be the big online tv player.

It's a really interesting time for tv and entertainment as a whole. There is a lot of opportunity for big players as well as niche players. Read an interesting article here.

4 Awesome Places to Watch TV Online Free and Legally

Watching tv online is the way of the future. Well, you could also say it's the way of today.

More and more people are seeking their entertainment online. The beauty of watching tv online is that you can watch your favorite shows at your convenience and often without obnoxious commercials.

You don't need to worry about getting to your couch at a certain time. You don't need to worry about setting your tivo (as if that's some impossible task). Heck, you don't even need to be home. And now more and more, you don't even need to be by a computer.

In the past year, online tv has become exponentially better. I wanted to share with you 4 of the best places you can find free tv shows and movies online. To qualify for this list, the website had to have high quality content, it had to provide it for free, and the site had to be well-designed and easy to use.

These four sites fit the bill.

1) Hulu - Backed by Fox and NBC (both owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp) , Hulu is probably the best place to watch tv online. You can also watch a lot of movies in full streaming videos.

There are all kinds of shows at hulu (click link to read more details about what you can find at the site), from big-name powerhouse shows like Desperate Housewives to House, to canceled (but great!) shows like Arrested Development, and to quirky oldies like Alf and A-Team.

If you're academically inclined, you can watch shows like Nova and National Geographic.

When I found Arrested Development online I almost lost it in a good way. I loved that show. I hear there's a movie in the works.

If you own your own blog or website, you can actually embed full episodes, movies, and clips onto your own posts, which is very cool. It's one extra step of user interaction that pushes Hulu to the forefront of online tv destinations and gives it a great head start out of the gate.

2) Fancast - Gotta love Fancast. The thing I like is the general atmosphere of this website. Owned by Comcast, Fancast is a website that tries to supply every bit of information you could need in regard to tv watching.

You can find full schedules of terrestrial tv shows (how about that phrase?) and other information about your favorite programs. Fancast (more info in another post at the link) will even recommend shows to you based on what you've been interested in previously.

But the best part about the site is the free tv shows and movies you can access and watch right from the site. Honestly, you can find many of the same shows that you can find online at Hulu, but there are some shows that stream exclusively to either site.

Make sure you check out the movie section too.

I recommend both of these sites as online tv destinations.

By the time you get through Hulu and Fancast, you probably won't have time to watch anymore shows online and if you do you will probably be tv-ed out. The breadth of content you can get at the above mentioned sites is pretty extensive.

I'll recommend two more places you can go to find tv online because I know that a lot of personal preference goes into which sites you like. Navigation, set up, video size, etc. These are all ways in which these sites vary.

3) Yahoo Television - Most of the shows here stream from hulu, but the navigation at Yahoo tv is super easy to use and the site is simply laid out. There's an extensive list of the tv shows you can access online at this site.

4) IN2TV - This site, run by a AOL, is a good place to find tv online. You can watch full episodes here just like the other sites I mentioned, and you can get a good mix of quirky, random, and old shows as well.

Right now on the front page you can find featured content such as the Flintstones, old Ben Stiller skits, and the pilot episode of the show Smith, starring Ray Liotta, among other tv links.

See what I mean about random. Sometimes it may be worthwhile to hit this site to see what interesting content you can find.

This is my short list of the best places to find free tv shows and movies online. I hope this will suffice and will quench your tv desires. If it doesn't, then I don't know what to tell you, other than that you are a full-on tv junkie!

Just kidding. But if you like dark comedy-dramas, then Weeds is right up your alley.

Here is a brief synopsis of Weeds Season 4 episode 7:

"When Nancy is denied a share of the incoming pot by Guillermo, she decides to go over his head to Esteban. Celia discovers the cheap medication at Mexican pharmacies.

Silas and Lisa get intimate, while Shane discovers some shocking photos. Andy and Doug begin interviewing for their human smuggling operation."

As you can see, the show is heating up.

Be honest, the only reason you tune into reality show Big Brother 10 is because Julie Chen, the host of the show, is pretty attractive.

Just kidding. You tune in to see normal--I mean average--people (there's nothing normal about the people on this show) manipulate and use people for their own eventual gain.

It's a little like putting a few rats in a cage and...Rats is a little mean. Let's go with the hamster metaphor.

It's a little like putting a few hamsters in a cage, giving them limited space, and putting them through different challenges and competitions everyday. Big Brother is what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. But add a sizable chunk of change for the winner as an extra element to the show and you get some serious weirdness.

Buck Rogers, the character, has been in the American conscious in one from or another for the past eighty years--in novellas, radio shows, comic strips, and tv shows.

Buck Rogers was a television show on ABC in the early fifties for a short amount of time. Paralleling the growth in knowledge about outer space, the original tv series featured outer space as a prominent locale for the swashbuckling Rogers to save the day.

The character was revamped for tv in 1979 by NBC and this is the incarnation of the famous show you can watch online today.

Batman Dark Knight Sets Unbeatable Box Office Record

Batman The Dark Knight has set what seems to be an unbeatable box office records.

The newest installment of the hugely popular Batman movie franchise, which stars Christian Bale as the caped crusader and Heath Ledger as his nemesis, the Joker, has pulled in $300 million in ten days.

Batman The Dark Knight could break the all-time box office record of around $600 million which was set by the movie Titanic.

Criss Angel to do Mindfreak Episode Live

Criss Angel, the namesake of the popular A&E show Criss Angel: Mindfreak, will perform the show "live," according to sources at the network.

The live episode of Mindfreak will air July 30th at 10pm. In the show, Angel will attempt to escape via helicopter from a hotel rigged with explosives.

If that isn't good tv, then I don't know what is. They say that good drama is placing an unstoppable force against an immovable object and that conflict is key. I think Criss is taking this ethos to heart.

Criss Angel will also walk on Lake Mead for his season opener.

Dog the Bounty Hunter Back for Season 5

Dog the Bounty Hunter fell from grace not too long ago for a racist rant that was recorded from a cell phone conversation.

But now Dog is back and starring in Dog the Bounty Hunter season 5. The always amusing, always entertaining, always strange show returns to A&E at 9pm.

For those who don't know, Dog aka Duane Chapman is a bounty hunter for a bail bond agency who hunts down criminals on the run from their crimes (and their debts).

His wife and family come along for the ride. Dog's son, Leland, even helps track down the criminals with his father.

Pamela Anderson's New Reality TV Show

Pamela Anderson has been shooting a new reality show called "Pam: Girl on the Loose" that will debut August 3rd on the E Network. It seems like an unfortunate title using the word "loose" in the title of her own show.

Oddly enough, Anderson is living with her ex-husband, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, a situation that could provide some of the much needed reality show conflict.

Gossip Girl Ads Too Sexy?

You have to be kidding me. It thought it was a non-issue that shows like Gossip Girl sell sex. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying no one should be surprised about it.

The point of a tv show is to get as many viewers as possible in whatever demographic you are targeting. Racy advertising attracts young viewers. End of story.

The director of the Parents Television Council said the recent ad campaign "...reeks of desperation."

The head of marketing at the CW had this to say: "What we're trying to do is communicate with the audience in a way that they like and can appreciate."

In fairness, sure, Gossip Girl is not a wholesome family show at all, but it really is up to parents to know what their kids are watching and to give them rules, etc.

This is the kind of argument that probably is a necessary conversation. There has to be that push and pull, because no network exec, or tv show creator for that matter, cares about your kids.

VH1 recently turned the cynicism the public has for reality show contestants into a reality tv show. This is how crazy and cyclical the reality tv show concept has become.

The concept of I Love Money is the most popular contestants from the "Flavor of Love" shows and to offer the winner of the contest show $250,000.

The creators of the show figured they would let these contestants compete in crazy competitions in an exotic location for what they really want--not love, but money.

What's really going on here is a large corporation dangling what is a pretty good sum of money for most people and seeing how much crazy stuff Americans will do for money.

Erin Andrews is an ESPN sideline reporter.

Since the 2004 season, Erin Andrews has served as a reporter for the ESPN College Football Saturday telecast as well as the Saturday Primetime college basketball game and the Big Ten college basketball coverage.

In 2005, she added Major League Baseball sideline reporting to her responsibilities.

She's a triple threat in that she knows football, baseball, and happens to be a babe.

Shannen Doherty Returns to New 90210 Series

Shannen Doherty will return to Beverly Hills. Doherty will be in the cast for the new Beverly Hills 90210 series on Fox.

Also returning to the case are Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling. Shannen Doherty was on the original 90210 series for four years.

This new incarnation of the seminal 1990's series will be interesting. We'll see how it turns out.

Does the iPhone 3G Live Up to the Hype?

The iPhone 3G was recently unveiled by Apple, Inc. The iPhone has many fans and many detractors as well. It looks like the second version of the iPhone will be a blockbuster hit.

If you don't like Mac products, you might prefer Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve, and Samsung's Instinct as comparable alternatives to the iPhone.

The thing that most people are talking about are all the applications that are available on the new Apple product. There have reportedly been some problems with the itunes functions, but glitches are to be expected.

Most iPhone fans have a love/hate relationship with their phones. They love having something so cool and being the first on the block with it, but they hate that it doesn't always work as well as it should.

T-Mobile Sidekick 2008 Coming July 30

The new T-Mobile phone will be released July 30. It's name is pretty uncreative. The company is sticking to their branding and probably in an attempt not to confuse people is calling the new mobile gadget the Sidekick 2008.

They're really sticking to their guns.

The Sidekick 2008 will include a 2 megapixel camera, video recording capability, and a 2.6" screen. This badboy will be unleashed at the end of this month and is being called an "entry level" (more like "gateway" as in gateway drug because these Sidekicks are addicting) device, which means it will be affordable.

Emmys nominations this year according to this article are going to the dark, complex characters.

Michael C. Hall of Dexter received a nomination for best actor. His character, Dexter, a serial killer of serial killers is pretty darn dark and complex.

John Hamm of Mad Men plays a dark, secretive character with a mysterious past. Brian Cranston plays the lead character in Breaking Bad, an AMC series along with Mad Men, which is about a high school chemistry teacher who resorts to cooking and selling meth in order to pay for his chemotherapy sessions.

The shows that these actors are on are three of the best tv shows on the air right now.

In one episode of 30 Days, he lives on a reservation for 30 days. Another episode is about Animal Rights. In a third one, Spurlock spends 30 days in a wheelchair to give the viewers a taste of what that is like.

My only question is why are people doing these kinds of things? If you take the fact that Miley Cyrus is a teen phenomenon and a multi-million industry, you realize that she is a 17 year old girl.

Watch Dexter Season 3 this Fall

Dexter is one of the best (and creepiest) shows to come out in the past several years. A Showtime original series based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter is a show about a serial killer with a conscious.

Well, Dexter doesn't quite have a conscious as much as he has a mission. His mission is to put people who hurt other people out of their misery. He is a serial killer of serial killers.

The show is really interesting, colorful, and fun to watch as Dexter cruises through his life in sun-drenched Miami, a perfect place for Dexter, who works as a blood spatter expert for the Miami police department, to carry out his mission.

Dexter is dark, funny, and always entertaining. Dexter season 3 starts this fall on Showtime. Seasons one and two will be shown on CBS this season as well, so you can watch them for free and get caught up.

Season two of Dexter will be released on DVD in August. You can preorder it at Amazon and get it before all of your friends do.

I guess a pretty bad tv movie wasn't enough to satiate the need for more Night Rider shows. A new series of Night Rider will be starting on CBS in late September. This show could be pretty entertaining.

Even if it's not, the new Kitt, a tricked out Cobra Mustang may be worth tuning in for.

Dave Attell Hosts The Gong Show On Comedy Central

Dave Attell, the funnyman who used to host the Comedy Central show Insomniac will be returning to the network as the host of the new incarnation of The Gong Show.

The Gong Show was a classic 70's tv show created and hosted by Chuck Barris (who was also by his own account a spy for the government). The show has wild and crazy acts that either get good reviews of get "gonged" off the stage.

This is truly good timing considering how similar this type of show is to the other competition shows out there. Think about it. American Idol, America's Got Talent, and So You Think You Can Dance.

Every once in a while, someone comes on the show and has talent, but usually, the person or performance is ridiculous. Or course, this kind of thing gets higher ratings than just really talented people performing well.

This show could be interesting, especially for the reality tv fans out there.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an edgy comedy show about several people in their late 20's who run a downtrodden Irish Bar in Philadelphia. The show tackles all kinds of edgy topics and has gained a pretty good following.

Danny Devito is the biggest name on the cast. He joined the show in Season 2. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is reminiscent of a viral video type of online show. It just has that lower production value, realistic feel to it.

The humor also reminds me a little of Arrested Development, a show that was canceled way too soon. It's Always Sunny was recently renewed for a third season on the FX network.

HBO's Generation Kill Keeps it Real

HBO's seven part miniseries about the war in Iraq called Generation Kill started on July 13th. The show was created by The Wire creator David Simon and is based on Evan Wright's book. Critics are saying that the show is more journalistic than dramatic and is very realistic and believable.

A show about Iraq is going to have a hard time pleasing everyone, but David Simon and HBO seem to know what they're doing. Just from the previews of Generation Kill, the show look riveting, exciting, and sad. I will definitely be watching this series.

Mad Men puts AMC on the Map

I just read an interesting article about the acclaimed AMC series Mad Men. This show is really acclaimed and for good reason. It's great. If you like clever dialogue, interesting, complex story lines, and detailed period set pieces, then you will probably get a kick out of Mad Men.

One of the interesting things about Mad Men is the incredibly strong and all-encompassing advertising push behind the show. AMC is spending 25 million dollars to promote their first foray into dramatic tv. I think it's working.

All this success could not have happened to a better show. Seriously.

Roku Netflix Movie Player Is a Winner

The Roku Netflix movie player looks like it may be a winner. This tv set top box connects to your tv very easily and has a really simple remote control. If you belong to Netflix, then you can stream movies directly from the site, through the box, and watch them on your tv.

This is pretty cool. Apple made a similar product not too long ago, but it received little fanfare and has definitely not become industry standard by any means.

Whoever can win this battle for interfacing movies from the internet directly to a tv screen will have the next tivo on their hands, meaning they could become the brand name in this type of technology.

Online entertainment is here to stay, that's been proven. The only question is who is going to take the reigns and score big in the online entertainment realm.

Roku may be able to achieve this with their Netflix player. It's marked by its simplicity and ease of use. It has also been said that the machine will work with other networks, not just Netflix. We will have to wait and see as more details arise.

Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), one of the most popular teens on the planet will be hosting the 2008 Teen Choice Awards on Fox. Gossip Girl has 14 nominations in the awards ceremony.

The awards are surfboards and the guests are some of the most popular entertainers of the day. Chris Brown has nine individual nominations for his music. It's funny because Miley may be a recipient of one of the awards as well as the host of the show.

Who Really Watches Reality TV Anyway?

Reality TV shows are a phenomenon that tv watchers are well familiar with. Even if you haven't ever watched a reality show or don't own a tv, either you or a friend of yours has appeared on one of these hyper-real competition shows or at least tried out for one.
