Mad Men

Mad Men is a new show on AMC about Manhatten Admen in the 1960's. The show received great reviews when it premiered, most of which focused on the meticulous attention to detail in recreating the time period. To stay true to the time, the show also prominently features smoking and drinking--in fact not a scene passes by free of someone imbibing or inhaling something.

Below is a preview of the first episode of Mad Men.

The most fascinating and well done aspect of the show is the attempt to examine the present time through the prism of the repressed and oppressive time period of the 60's. It's a story device that was so well-done in The Sopranos. This is no coincidence--Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner was an executive producer and writer for the HBO series.

Here's a sneak peak of Episode 4.

Give Mad Men a chance. It's the best tv show not on HBO or Showtime.

Own season one of the series.

Geico Cavemen Sitcom Coming Soon

Here is a video from youtube of all the Geico Cavemen commercials combined. These are clever commercials featuring postmodern yuppie cavemen dealing with prejudice, intolerance, and the existential ennui a sensitive and misunderstood minority group is bound to face. Behind those protruding simian brows lies a real person with feelings--at least Geico would have you believe.

But does the Caveman concept have enough meat to it to sustain a half hour of comedy, much less a season of half hour shows? Will it catch on like proverbial wildfire or will it be clubbed on the head after three episodes.

Watch the preview of the ABC pilot below and judge for yourself.

Balls of Fury 3 Minute Featurette

Okay. One thing to say about Balls of Fury, the forthcoming movie starring Chris Walken and an ensemble comedic cast of relative unknowns. This movie looks...AWESOME!

Combining elements from Dodgeball, Ace Ventura, and Scarface(?), this movie is sure to be a hit. Well...with a certain group of people. I confess to be a member of this particular group of people--people who love dumb comedy movies.

Watch this 3 minute behind the scenes featurette for Balls of Fury.

13 TV Shows that Never Should Have Been Canceled

Often it seems that the logic surrounding which TV shows get the green light for another season and which shows get canned is a little off. True, to claim that there is anything resembling logic in Hollywood might be akin to claiming that Barry Bonds has a small- to average-sized head.

At the website Tubewad, there is a list of some of the most entertaining shows to be pulled off the air seemingly prematurely. Unsurprisingly, the consummate B-actor Bruce Campbell starred in two of the shows on the list. I have to say that I agree that Brisco County Jr. never should have been cancelled. In fact, I can imagine myself tivo-ing some episode from what should be the show's 13th season as I write this now.

I also agree that the Fox comedy Arrested Development should not have been unceremoniously taken behind the barn by wary and un-understanding executives. That show would be huge right now if it was still one the air.

Only time will tell which one of these canceled shows will have the spin-off movie made first. If we are lucky, Bruce Campbell will be involved.

13 MORE Places to Watch Free TV Online

At the Cucirca blog, there is a good list of links and sites where you can watch free tv online. In an older post here, I linked to Cucirca's first list of 13 places to watch tv free online.

Subsequently, another list called 13 more places to watch tv free online was posted at the same blog.

Here is the link to a good (and kind of random, but in a good way) list of places you can find tv shows, torrents, sports programming, and even free movie downloads.

Getting Good with BitTorrent

Making things a Bit easier

I found a great post at lifehacker which is all about BitTorrent, the hugely popular lightning-fast file-transfer protocol that is used for the transfer of movies, music, programs, and any other information that can be disseminated digitally.

It is probably most popular for the transfer of free movies, videos, and music. So there is the stigma of online piracy surrounding bitTorrent. Information should be free and you should be able to do what you want with it.

Frankly, I don't know much about bitTorrent technology. But I want to learn a little more about it. This post is essentially a list of articles and websites that have useful information like how to speed up your torrents, how to organize your torrents, and how to automatically download your favorite tv shows.

Here is the link to the article, Getting Good with BitTorrent.

Beginner's Guide to BitTorrent

Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about BitTorrent and file-sharing

An interesting post at Lifehacker illuminates the uninitiated on the mysteries of bitTorrent technology, the lightning-fast file-sharing protocol used by millions of people (or at least hundreds of thousands of people) every day.

BitTorrent technology has been around for half a decade and it's an incredibly popular way for people to share movies, music, and programs across the world wide web.

If you want to learn more about BitTorrent read the blog posting titled The Beginner's guide to BitTorrent at Lifehacker.
